In 1952 my father; John A. Joyner, received a sample of raw ore material that the Zeigler Chemical company of Great Neck, New York was calling Gilsonite.
At that time my father, being the entrepreneur that he was, was buying raw materials from a Paint Manufacturing company called Bennett Paint Company and manufacturing his own Superior brand Paint.
Zeigler Chemical company learned of my fathers creativeness & inventiveness through Bennett Paint Company and sought his knowledge on what may be made from this raw Gilsonite Ore that they were mining in Bonanza, Utah.
For the next five years or so my father and our neighbor burnt down a barn and a couple of chicken coops in the makeshift lab he created, until he finally converted that raw Gilsonite Ore into a liquid form and created the first asphalt seal coat.
That product actually rejuvenated and sealed the old dried up asphalt.
He registered the company name as Gilsonite Manufacturing Company in 1957.
Being the entrepreneur perfectionist that he was, he continued to refine the formula into the finest asphalt seal coating product ever manufactured.
